I did notice that many so-called wifi dongles claimed Linux compatibility, but were not actually plug-n-play. So I ordered one online and that should get me off the dime. And I did find a recommendation for the Panda dongles, saying that they were reasonably priced and plug-n-play. I did some further looking around, and it seems that many people are having difficulty with AC type dongles. My server does have an Ethernet jack, but no way to get a cable to plug into it (at least not one that is easy and cheap). Even Windows didn't have the driver automatically, but at least the Windows setup worked and installed the driver.Īt any rate, I can't really do what was done in that article you found, as it (like many other solutions) require a wired network connection. I guess I am not the only one having this problem. They are cheap enough, I would be willing to buy something that just worked.Īny ideas or suggestions? I had to put the server back online, so I have somewhat limited time on it for testing. But have not been able to find recommendations. From looking around the forum, I see mention of dongles that "just work".

I guess it is trying to compile the driver and can't do it on the CDROM (being readonly, I assume).

I have an installation disc for it with "PC-Linux" software on it, but I have not been able to use it, I am mystified by all the errors that happen when I execute the "install.sh" on the CDROM. According to Windows Device Manager it is a Realtek 8811CU. But Mint has no clue about the Wif-Fi dongle. I went straight for a dual boot setup, Windows 10 has 1 disc and Mint has its own disc, I switch by using the Bios boot order. So then I tried installing on my server (testing was done on my workstation). I had to fiddle with the network connection setup in VB, but no real problem. I have it working in VirtualBox, no problem. I am trying to setup Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon. I am a Windows user, trying to migrate to Linux.
